82. XÉNOPHON. Les OEuvres nouvellement traduites en François, recueillies toutes en un volume, & dédiées au Roy par Pyramus de Candole. Cologny, P. Aubert for the Caldorian Society, 1613. In-folio, [4] f., 777 p., [17] p., fawn calf, ornate ribbed spine, double gilt fillet on covers (partly contemporary binding). First edition of the translation by Simon Goulart (1543-1628), who succeeded Théodore de Bèze, according to Barbier, who documents the attribution at length. Brunet is more in favor of a compilation of translators. The work was published by Pyrame de Candolle (1566-1626) at the presses of the Société Caldorienne (named after the Caldora family of Naples). After becoming a citizen of Geneva in 1594 and obtaining the rank of cornette de cavalerie in the service of the republic, Pyrame de Candolle set up his printing works in Cologny, near Geneva. Fine engraved printer's mark on the title. Particularly noteworthy are the first French translations of the texts on horses and horsemanship, and the text on hunting, making this particular edition sought-after by enthusiasts in both fields. Thebaud complains that he has never seen it: "elle est fort rare", he writes. Binding a little worn, partially restored, with missing leather at head and tail, corners dulled, halos on boards, jaws split, 2 hinges broken, a few freckles, marginal halos, tiny marginal bites or tears, a few passages highlighted in the margins in pencil and other defects not serious.
