109. CONDILLAC (Étienne Bonnot de). Traité des animaux. Amst - Lot 109
109. CONDILLAC (Étienne Bonnot de). Traité des animaux. Amsterdam (Paris), C.-A. Jombert, 1766. In-12, vii, 200 p., granulated basane, smooth spine. cold framing on covers.
Second edition enlarged by a letter from Condillac to Lelarge de Lignac. In this work, first published in 1755, Condillac seeks to understand how animals perceive and interact with their environment, and how these interactions influence their behavior. He uses his observations of animals to better understand the mechanisms of human perception and cognition, emphasizing the importance of sensitivity and sensory experience in the development of knowledge. Using empirical observations to support his arguments in line with the principles of Enlightenment philosophy, Condillac opposed Cartesian theories that considered animals to be machines devoid of sentience, and proposed a more nuanced and respectful vision of animal nature.
Corners dulled, repair to title page, handwritten bookplate to title, other defects minor.
