120 [DEZALLIER D'ARGENVILLE (Antoine-Joseph)]. La théorie et - Lot 120
120 [DEZALLIER D'ARGENVILLE (Antoine-Joseph)]. Paris, P.-J. Mariette, 1747. In-4, [6] f., 482 p., [1] f. (priv. & errata), marbled fawn calf, ornate ribbed spine (period binding). Fourth edition (1st 1709) much enlarged, especially in the hydraulic section, and illustrated with engravings in the text and hors-texte plates, most of them folded. The plates are engraved after Jean Chaufourier and Alexandre Le Blond, which for a time led to this anonymous work being attributed to the latter. It is, however, by the naturalist, collector and art historian Antoine Joseph Dezallier d'Argenville (1680-1765). Dezallier had planned to illustrate the hydraulic section with plates of machinery and fountains, but was overtaken by Belidor's Traité d'architecture hydraulique and decided not to include them for fear of being considered a plagiarist. He also contributed 589 articles on gardening and hydraulics to Diderot's Encyclopédie. Provenance: bookplate engraved on the reverse, unidentified, on the frontispiece featuring an eagle holding an escutcheon with the numeral ROM, a snake, a temple and a bustling city in the distance. The name has disappeared in an attempt to tear off the bookplate. Corners dulled, one stitch on a spine, paper missing from the bookplate, rare foxing, a good copy. (Ganay, 45; Plesch, 199).
