122. DODART (Denis). Mémoires pour servir à l'histoire des p - Lot 122
122. DODART (Denis). Mémoires pour servir à l'histoire des plantes. Paris, Imprimerie Royale (S. Marbre-Cramoisy), 1679. In-12, [7] f., 329 p., brown basane, ornate ribbed spine (contemporary binding). Second edition with Denis Dodart's EAS on the flyleaf to John Ray (Latinized as Raïus). Physician and botanist Denis Dodart (1634-1707) was directing the Royal Academy of Sciences' studies on the History of Plants when, in 1674, British naturalist John Ray (1607-1725) complained to the scientific community about having to consult a multitude of sources for the study of plants. This led to the first project for a universal botanical encyclopedia, listing, naming and illustrating all known plants. These Mémoires were the first step, the blueprint as it were, and the work is now considered the founder of botanical science in France. An autographed copy of great patrimonial value. Binding lightly rubbed, minor spotting on upper board, corners dulled, a few traces and foxing, a through worm bite on page over-title, light halo at top of a few leaves, other defects minor. (Nissen, 502; Pritzel, 2341; Plesch, 204).
