132. GUÉRIN (Felix-Édouard). Dictionnaire pittoresque d'histoire naturelle et des phénomènes de la nature. Paris, Au Bureau des souscription, 1833-1834. 13 volumes in-4, 9 of text and 4 of plates. Contemporary binding in green half-basane, smooth spine decorated, marbled edges. First edition, with 718 copper-engraved plates. This fine work of natural history is a collective work published in 720 issues. It is illustrated with 718 (out of 720) natural history plates depicting all kinds of animals, plants, minerals, astronomical and physical phenomena and various natural curiosities. Félix-Édouard Guérin-Menneville was part of Duperrey's voyage to the Australian coast, and also took part in Bory de Saint-Vincent's important voyage and publication on discoveries made in the Morea. A large number of Australian species, including butterflies, were discovered by this eminent scientist. (Nissen, 4616; Graesse III, 171). Missing plates 178, 378 (replaced by a duplicate plate 370), 521. Repair with piece of leather on top of spine of volume 5. Spines faded.
