145. LAMARCK (Jean-Baptiste de Monet de). Flore françoise, o - Lot 145
145. LAMARCK (Jean-Baptiste de Monet de). Flore françoise, ou description succincte de toutes les plantes qui croissent naturellement en France. Paris, Imprimerie royale, 1778. 3 volumes in-8, 4 p., cxix, 223 p., 132 p., pl., xxix ; iv, 683 p. ; 654 p., xx, [1] f. (errata), marbled fawn basane, ornate ribbed spine (period binding). First edition illustrated with a table and 8 folded plates. This first work by the famous botanist Jean-Baptiste Lamarck (1744-1829) uses a systematic plant classification with keys, facilitating the identification and understanding of different species. This methodical approach, essential at a time when botanical taxonomy was in full development, greatly influenced subsequent botanical work. Worm bites on the leather of the bindings, dull corners, slight damage to the headpieces, tiny worm bite in the margin of the first leaves of volume one, rare freckles or marks, other defects are minor. (Pritzel, 5002; Plesch, 295a for a later edition).
