170 HUARTE (Juan). L'Examen des esprits pour les sciences où sont montrées les différences d'esprits qui se trouvent parmy les hommes, & à quelle sorte de science chacun et propre en particulier. Paris, J. Guignard, 1675. 2 vols. in-12, [6] p., 348 p. ; [2] f., 315 p., [21] p., brown basane, ornate ribbed spine.
Work by the Basque physician and philosopher from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port Juan Huarte (1529-1588). The work was first published in Spain in 1575, and soon enjoyed great success before being placed on the Index. Huarte proposed a systematic classification of human minds to determine the types of activities and sciences to which each was most suited. Drawing on Aristotelian philosophy and Galenic medicine to elaborate his theory, he developed a tripartite system of temperaments, reconsidering classical theories in the light of his own observations. Huarte interprets certain faculties, traditionally attributed to divine inspiration, as physiological phenomena generated by nature. Pushing his reasoning to the limits of knowledge, he proposes a refined diet to create ingenious and wise children, assuming a contrario that peasants forced to eat a coarse diet can only have foolish children.
Provenance: Pascal Nicolas Melchior Badin de Saint-Aubin, avocat au parlement de Paris, attested by his armorial bookplate engraved by Chollet, pasted on the back cover.
