Marie-Louise Lachapelle (1769-1821), chief midwife at the Maternité de Paris, records here her exceptional clinical experience, having supervised over 40,000 deliveries during her career. In it, Lachapelle describes in detail the different fetal presentations and possible complications during childbirth, and proposes innovative techniques for resolving them, particularly for difficult deliveries. His work helped establish obstetrics as a medical discipline in its own right, and influenced the training of midwives and doctors for several decades. The book also bears witness to the growing importance of women in the practice and teaching of obstetrics in the early 19th century.
Published by Antoine Dugès, her nephew, the first volume bears the signature of Lachapelle (her husband?) and the second volume an initialled autograph dispatch from Dugès to Baron Antoine Dubois (1756-1837).
Bindings slightly rubbed, binder's guillotine on the mailing, freckles and other minor defects.
