Third edition, enlarged and illustrated with a frontispiece portrait by Anna Mérimée of the alienist and precursor of psychiatry Philippe Pinel (1745-1826). In this work, Pinel, chief physician at the Salpêtrière and member of the Académie des Sciences, proposes a new approach to the classification of diseases based on the analytical method. He endeavors to systematize medical knowledge by applying a scientific rigor inspired by the natural sciences. Binding slightly rubbed, constant freckling, other defects minor.
