178. STAHL (George Ernst). Traité des sels, in which it is s - Lot 178
178. STAHL (George Ernst). Traité des sels, in which it is shown that they are composed of a subtle earth, intimately combined with water. Paris, J. B. Cussac, 1783. In-12, xxiv, 480 p., marbled fawn basane, ornate ribbed spine. New edition based on the original translation by Baron d'Holbach (1771). In this treatise, Georg Ernst Stahl (1659-1734), whom the encyclopedists put on an equal footing with Newton, aims to reinterpret certain alchemical concepts within a more rational, scientific framework. For example, he sought to provide a new explanation for the chemical transformation processes traditionally associated with alchemical transmutations, in the light of his phlogiston theory. He shows that three earths are the basis of all mineral combinations, and highlights the earthy nature of salts, whether found in the animal or plant kingdom. He does not fail to study the properties of gold in reaction with saline acids, as well as the phenomenon of crystallization, leading him to observations on vitriolic acid. Binding lightly rubbed, corners and edges dulled, occasional foxing, other defects minor. (Dorbon, 4645; Caillet, 10341; Duveen, 561).
