179. TISSOT (Samuel Auguste). L'onanisme, dissertation on the diseases produced by masturbation. Paris, M. Chapuis, 1773. In-12, xii, 264 p., marbled fawn basane, smooth spine decorated. 3rd edition of the work by Swiss physician Samuel Auguste Tissot (1728-1797), first published in Latin. In it, Tissot develops the idea that masturbation is a dangerous practice for health, capable of causing numerous physical and mental ailments. He drew on the medical theories of his day, notably the notion of equilibrium of the humours, to argue that excessive loss of semen weakens the body and mind. Although his conclusions were erroneous and moralistic, Tissot's work had a lasting impact on social and medical attitudes towards sexuality in the 18th and 19th centuries. Small worm bite to spine, other defects minor. (Garrison & Morton, 10478).
