182. BAUER (John, ill.) then TENGGREN (Gustav). Bland tomtar - Lot 182
182. BAUER (John, ill.) then TENGGREN (Gustav). Bland tomtar och troll [Among gnomes and trolls]. Göteborg and Stockholm "Julstämnings" Förlag, then Åhlén och Åkerlunds Förlag, 1908-1920. 5 vols. in 4 publisher's hardbacks and 1 vol. in paperback. Illustrated with numerous in- and out-of-text illustrations. Bland tomtar och troll is an annual collection of fairy tales and stories from Swedish popular culture, published since 1907. One of the most renowned illustrators of the series was John Bauer (1882-1918), who contributed to the editions until 1915. In 1918, the sinking of a steamer brought a tragic end to Bauer, his wife, son and 21 other passengers. Volumes 2 (1908), 3 (1909) and 6 (1912) are illustrated by the artist. The large paperback volume of 1918 and the hardback album of 1920 are illustrated by his successor, Tenggren, another great Swedish illustrator. These Swedish-language works are a poignant testimony to Scandinavian popular culture in the early 20th century, and it doesn't seem easy to get hold of the first issues. Fair condition for the hardcovers, an angular paper loss without affecting the text on the title page of volume 3, an oval vignette in black (page 107) in the 1912 volume is surrounded by two circles in red and blue pencil. The paperback volume suffers from defects: broken seam, broken spine with missing paper.
