185. BECQUE (Maurice de, ill.), MONTESQUIEU. Lettres persane - Lot 185
185. BECQUE (Maurice de, ill.), MONTESQUIEU. Lettres persanes. Paris, Aux Éditions de la Lampe d'or, Chez L. Baudel, 1925. In-4 illustrated with 30 color etchings by Maurice de Becque, lined with a bistre suite. Bound in old red basane with titled spine. The artist Maurice Jaubert de Becque (1878 - 1938) was a French painter who illustrated nearly 30 books, including some erotica under an assumed name, and is particularly renowned for his talents as an animal painter and engraver. The edition of this work was 330 copies for the deluxe edition and 1000 copies for the current edition on pur fil, which includes fewer illustrations. Our copy is part of the deluxe edition, one of 50 copies printed on papier de rives, with a suite of illustrations and the engravings printed in full color à la poupée. In fact, only the first 175 copies benefit from the "à la poupée" print run. The book is also adorned by the illustrator with purplish initials, headbands and vignettes. The leather binding is very rough.
