224. LEMARIÉ (Henry, ill.), VILLON (François). Oeuvres de Fr - Lot 224
224. LEMARIÉ (Henry, ill.), VILLON (François). Oeuvres de Françoys Villon. Paris, J. Porson, 1942-1943. One large in-8 volume, illustrated with numerous color engravings, in a signed, lined and mosaic binding in red morocco, boards and spine decorated with intersecting gray listels, turquoise flowers at the corners and gilded scrolled fillets. Binding lined with pearl-gray tabis. On the reverse of the boards, the morocco frame is decorated with a play of pearled fillets, straight or curved fillets and small pieces of turquoise-blue mosaic. Matching manual headbands, all edges gilt (on witnesses), half morocco folder with band and cover, felt-lined slipcase (Guigue R.).
An edition of 775 copies was printed, this being one of 650 on Arches vellum pur chiffon. The 226 miniatures required the artist to work diligently for 450 consecutive days. This was the first book illustrated by Henri Lemarié. His work is remarkable, very fine and wonderfully enhanced by the coloring, "interpreted by hand" by art illuminator Edmond Vairel. Over 25,000 hours were needed to complete the color enhancement of the entire edition.
A fine copy of a beautiful book in a handsome signed binding.
