238. POGANY (Willy, ill.), WAGNER (Richard). Tannhäuser, a d - Lot 238
238. POGANY (Willy, ill.), WAGNER (Richard). Tannhäuser, a dramatic poem. London, Harrap, 1911. Gd in-8, publisher's boards, gray cloth decorated with a historiated plate in gold and blue, spine titled and decorated, interior text in red and black, numerous original lithographs in black and color, 16 plates and one color vignette pastedown.
Freely translated from Wagner's Tannhäuser by T.W. Rolleston, this work is above all one of the four best-known and most celebrated works by Hungarian painter Willy Pogany, produced during his London period: Parsifal, Lohengrin, Tannhäuser and The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. Entirely designed by Pogany, cover, endpapers, text calligraphed in red and black on gray-tinted paper, illustrations and ornamentation on every page, this nugget of Art-Nouveau truly deserves to be called an artist's book.
Spine slightly faded, cloth rubbed.
