239. POGANY (Willy, ill.), WAGNER (Richard). The tale of Loh - Lot 239
239. POGANY (Willy, ill.), WAGNER (Richard). The tale of Lohengrin, Knight of the swan. London, Harrap, 1913. Gd in-8, publisher's boards, tan cloth decorated with a gilt historiated plate, cold ornaments, spine titled and decorated, numerous original lithographs in black and color, often full-page, 8 color plates laminated. Lohengrin is undoubtedly Hungarian painter Willy Pogany's masterpiece, the black engravings having the finesse of goldsmith's jewels, the influences of symbolism, esotericism and Art Nouveau are constantly present. This avant-garde work heralds the comic strip and the graphic novel. There are even hints of seventies pop in some of the four-tone engravings, which combine floral compositions, the curves of naked women and flowing hair. Freely translated from Wagner's Lohengrin by T.W. Rolleston, this work entirely designed by Pogany - cover, endpapers, calligraphic text on gray-tinted paper, illustrations and ornamentation on every page - is an Art-Nouveau nugget and truly deserves to be called an artist's book. Covers slightly bent, cloth rubbed in places. A handwritten ex-dono, in graceful handwriting, on the back cover.
