243. RACKHAM (Arthur), WAGNER (Richard). The Ring of the Nib - Lot 243
243. RACKHAM (Arthur), WAGNER (Richard). The Ring of the Nibelung I and II. Tétralogie. Paris, Hachette & Cie, s.d. (1910-1911). 4 parts in 2 vols. gd in-8, illustrated with numerous colored engravings, publisher's bradel cloth binding, boards decorated in gilt, spine titled and decorated.
This is the current, unjustified edition of the first edition, after the 330 numbered copies for the first volume and 390 numbered copies for the second. The first volume, L'Or du Rhin et la Valkyrie (The Rhine Gold and the Valkyrie), contains 34 hors texte color compositions, while the second volume, Siegfried et le Crépuscule des Dieux (Siegfried and the Twilight of the Gods), features 30. The illustrations are as mythical as their subject, providing a sensual, tragic visual backdrop to the story.
A victim of his own success at the time, Rackham always regretted not having been able to further develop his natural taste for the fantastic. Nevertheless, many of his illustrations bear the mark of his taste for the strange and disquieting. Among the distressing motifs that run through his work, that of the entanglement of the body or hair is recurrent (Virginie Meyer, on Le Blog Gallica).
Volume 1: discoloration on boards and foxing. Spine insolate. Volume 2: spine unstained.
(Monod, 11464 and 11465)
