247. STEINLEN (Théophile, Alexandre), LECOMTE (Georges, text - Lot 247
247. STEINLEN (Théophile, Alexandre), LECOMTE (Georges, texte). Steinlen, Cats and other beasts. Dessins inédits. Paris, E. Rey, 1933. Large in-4, 20 plates out of text and around 150 drawings in text. Signed mosaic binding in navy crushed chagrin, with two mosaic cats in ochre or fawn morocco, one with golden eyes, on the upper board. The boards are quadruple-framed, three in gold and one in burgundy morocco. Smooth spine, titled in gold, decorated with gilded fillets and burgundy scrolls. The artist's name is titled in Chinese mosaic morocco, gilt head, edged slipcase (Louppe). Théophile Alexandre Steinlen, creator of the famous Chat Noir cabaret poster, was obviously a great lover of cats, and we know that he housed more than twenty of them in his house-workshop-garden on rue Caulaincourt, known as "Cats Cottage". His models, for the work shown here. A jack-of-all-trades, portraitist, poster artist, caricaturist and illustrator, and above all a humanist, he put his paintbrush to work for the underprivileged, whether mistigrious or commoners, laundresses, vagabonds or prostitutes. Edition of 545 copies, one of 500 on Arches vellum, in a beautiful signed and mosaic binding. Spine unstained, jaws slightly rubbed. Significant brown spots.
