251. THOMSON (Hugh, ill.) and SHAKESPEARE (William). The Merry Wives of Windsor. Paris, Hachette, 1912. In-4, publisher's blue cloth boards, first plate stamped with historiated gilt plate, smooth spine titled in gold, gilt head. 40 color plates mounted on strong paper, in captioned serpents.
Richly illustrated, bringing to life late medieval England, half-timbered houses, places of commerce, domestic scenes, welcoming inns, damsels in pretty dresses and the countryside in full bloom. Paper foxed, abundant foxing to first and last leaves.
Another volume by illustrator, poster artist and cartoonist William Heath Robinson is included: ROBINSON (W. Heath). A Song of the English. New-York, Page and Company, 1909. Publisher's red cloth boards stamped with military-floral gilt iron. Spine titled in gold. 30 color plates laminated under captioned serpents. 49 black vignettes in the text, closely resembling comic strip panels. This is the original American edition, published the same year as the original English edition, but later.
Headbands sagging, corners slightly rubbed, gaps between signatures and protrusion of signatures. One plate leaf detached, but present.
