254. WÜLFING (Sulamith). Albums 1 to 26. Wuppertal Elberfeld - Lot 254
254. WÜLFING (Sulamith). Albums 1 to 26. Wuppertal Elberfeld, Sulamith Wülfing verlag, 1932-1975. 26 paperback volumes, illustrated in black and color. Sulamith Wülfing (1901 - 1989) was a German artist who founded her own publishing house (in 1932), enabling her to publish her work freely, without pressure. Growing up with theosophist parents, Sulamith had visions of angels, fairies, gnomes and nature spirits, which she began drawing at the age of four. During the Second World War, Wülfing's house was destroyed along with many of her works in a bombing raid, and many of her works, considered by the regime as not conforming to the norm, were burned. Yet there's nothing dangerous about this dreamlike world of elves and gnomes, knights and princesses, angels and dragons, saints and children, dressed in sumptuous garments, textiles adorned with medieval interlacing, Nordic knots, Slavic embroidery, spidery lace against a backdrop of Gothic castles or wild nature strewn with flowers, brambles and snowflakes. Wülfing delivers goldsmith's work steeped in spirituality and wonder. Good condition.
