282. VILMORIN (Louise de), GRANDPIERRE (Victor, photographer - Lot 282
282. VILMORIN (Louise de), GRANDPIERRE (Victor, photographer). L'Echo des fantaisies. S.l. n.n. s.d. (1946). 2 volumes in-4; leaves in 2 marbled paper slipcases. A justification page is glued to the reverse of both slipcases, with Louise de Vilmorin's four-leaf clover emblem. First edition and first print run of 60 fine original photographs printed on ivory bristol, with gilded rounded corners, as on luxury playing cards. Total edition 260 copies. This book is the fruit of a collaboration between Louise de Vilmorin and decorator, antique dealer and photographer Victor Grandpierre. Grandpierre designed 60 scenes featuring antique and unusual objects belonging to the author. These include magic lanterns, drinking jars and bottles, snuffboxes, macabre objects, inkwells and statuettes. Louise de Vilmorin captioned the photographs with short poems, witticisms, holorimes and other figures of speech, printed in facsimile. The result is an unusual work with surrealist nuances. Victor Grandpierre was a decorator of great renown in the mid-twentieth century, working closely with Christian Dior and others. The slipcases are tired, cracked at various points and with small paper tears.
