317. BARBEY D'AUREVILLY (Jules). Undated LAS (circa 1874) on - Lot 317
317. BARBEY D'AUREVILLY (Jules). Undated LAS (circa 1874) on letterhead printed in green "never more" on watermarked English laid paper (Original Turkey Mill Kent), 21 x 13 cm.
In this letter to an intimate artist, Barbey d'Aurevilly refers to the third edition of Le Prêtre marié for which he was under contract with Victor Palmé. This edition was never published, "the publisher fearing that the title would offend his religious clientele" (Talvart & Place, I, 216). It also reveals his fascination with felines.
"My dear artist,
I understand cat without saying kitty. You would need to have what I said to Madame de Maistre. I may have it this week, but I don't have it for tonight.
This week, that is, the week we're about to enter, I'm on the last page of my married priest. Palmé won't give me his drafts until it's finished. Voilà!
I don't want you to drink from an empty glass, however small. I'd like it to be big and full.
Yours in friendship,
[signature]"
