328. SAND (George). Undated LAS (circa 1870) of 4 pages on l - Lot 328
328. SAND (George). Undated LAS (circa 1870) of 4 pages on laid paper, 13.5 x 10 cm.
The letter is in an unstamped envelope addressed to André Boutet, George Sand's neighbor in Palaiseau between 1865 and 1875, who was also her friend and confidant. We understand from the letter that her friend Louis Maillard has died (January 23, 1865), and that his widow would like to buy back from Sand the works that her husband had probably assembled.
"Dear friend, here is the n° that probably contains the gap. We only have this one, so please return it to us in two or three days.
I'm returning Mme Maillard's letter. Give her my best regards when you answer her. I have no desire to sell her the collection of my works, made by Maillard at my own expense and containing things that were hard to find and bought with my own money. It's the least I have left. Don't be defeated, because I wouldn't want to hurt this excellent woman's feelings for anything in the world, but she has no head and doesn't remember that this was said and agreed in front of her. As for the autographs she wants, I don't know whether you or I have them. When I go to Palaiseau, I'll look for them.
What's wrong with Elisa? Flu? I'll try to see her when I get out of rehearsal. I've got a cold too. Take care of your dear patients and get them back on their feet by the 15th. Yours sincerely, my dear old friend.
