William Adolphe BOUGUEREAU (1825 - 1905) - Lot 545
William Adolphe BOUGUEREAU (1825 - 1905) Roman Scene, 1855 Oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left 110 x 81.5 cm (Material shrinkage mainly in the red of the woman's tunic, some restorations) Provenance: - Purchased directly from the artist by the Sainte-Affrique family - By descent to the current owners Bibliography: - William Bouguereau - Catalogue raisonné of his Painted Work by Damien Bartoli and Frederick C. Ross, Antique Collectors Club, 2010, described and reproduced on page 43 as N°1855/08 Bouguereau made numerous studies for this painting, including a very accomplished one of the man seated in the foreground. This is almost certainly a studio work, with the father in the foreground in exactly the same position as in our painting, only the stone entablature has been replaced by a stool and a drapery has been added to cover the model's nudity. There is also a watercolor that reproduces our painting exactly. Experts Amaury de Louvencourt & Agnès Sevestre Barbé
