Bouguereau made numerous studies for this painting, including a very accomplished one of the man seated in the foreground. This is almost certainly a studio work, with the father in the foreground in exactly the same position as in our painting, only the stone entablature has been replaced by a stool and a drapery has been added to cover the model's nudity.
There is also a watercolor that reproduces our painting exactly.
