Very good to very good
The 21st Lancer Regiment took part in the Mahdist War, where it heroically distinguished itself at the Battle of Omdurman on September 2, 1898. With around 400 cavalrymen, the regiment charged a group of Dervishes they thought to be a handful, but fell upon more than 2,000 men. The battle was brief, but of rare violence, with the cavalrymen fighting on foot one against five. Winston Churchill, then a young lieutenant detached from the 4th Hussars, took part in this charge, which has gone down in history as the last cavalry charge of the British army. Trooper A. Heslop charged as part of Squadron B of the 21st Lancers, which suffered the heaviest casualties, with 9 killed and 26 wounded. This squadron received the highest number of gallantry awards of the four squadrons present: three Victoria Crosses and three Distinguished Conduct Medals.
