57. [HERMES TRISMEGISTUS]. Mercurii Trismegisti pymander, de potestate et sapientia dei. Ejusdem Asclepius, de voluntate dei. Opuscula sanctissimis mysteriis, ac vere coelestibus oraculis illustrissima. JAMBLICHUS, de mysteriis Ægyptiorum, Chaldæorum, & Assyriorum. PROCLUS, in Platonicum Alcibiadem, de anima & dæmone, idem De sacrificio & magia. Basel, M. Isingrin (J. Bebel), 1532. In-8, 480 p. (with error of numbering of the quires Aa and Aa2), [2] f. n.c., brown basane, spine with ornamented nerves (19th binding), edges antiquées.
Reunion of the major texts of hermeticism and alchemy.
The title page bears the calligraphic bookplate of Jean Boyer (ca. 1480-1546), archdeacon of Conques and chaplain to Georges d'Armagnac. His library was the subject of a research by Mathieu Desachy, Jean Boyer had the taste to highlight the passages which seemed important to him by using coloring. It is the case here on several sheets of which the f. A4 that we have photographed.
While the major part of his works was then preserved in the library of the fathers of the Christian doctrine in Villefranche de Rouergue, it would seem, according to the handwritten ex-libris at the bottom of the title page, that this copy passed through the hands of a certain Jacques Corneille (?) in 1577. Another hand has left the inscription "Factus philandri commutatione" and yet another one a mark with the mention "ne variatur".
Careful edition by Jean Bebel for the humanist bookseller Michel Isingrin, decorated with historiated initials, some of which seem to have a symbolic value, such as this sword-slayer of a sea serpent on f. A6. On the last leaf, a remarkable woodcut with the motto of the printer Jean Bebel. The Asclepius of Hermes Trismegistus is translated by Apuleius, the other works by Marsilio Ficino.
Small tear in the first box and in the tail of the volume, staining in the lower margin of the first 5 leaves, the other defects are minor.
This edition does not appear in Caillet, Dorbon, Guaita, Ferguson, or Duveen (Adams, 345; Wellcome, 3121; Brüning, 180).
