71. LIBEROTTI (Giovanni). Liberotti Impronte. Rome, G. Liber - Lot 71
71. LIBEROTTI (Giovanni). Liberotti Impronte. Rome, G. Liberotti, s.d. (circa 1820). 6 book-boxes bound in half vellum with smooth spine decorated in the romantic taste, 26.5 x 16 cm. Remarkable collection of reproductions of intaglios and cameos made from impressions made on the originals of ancient collections kept in Italian museums, including the Vatican Museums, the Villa Sommariva, the Museum of Naples, etc. These boxes were offered by the Roman stonemason Giovanni Liberotti to wealthy European travelers. During the great neo-classical craze of the early 19th century, Europeans visiting the great Italian museums found the opportunity to bring back more than a collection of engravings, the works of art themselves, faithfully reproduced in three dimensions. These ceramic replicas, close to the cookie, are set in rings of black card glued together and themselves glued in a presentation in book cases opening on each side. The set forms 12 presentations where more than 200 reproductions are distributed. Glued to the reverse of each plate is a handwritten descriptive list of the works of art reproduced. Good general condition, some medallions are loose but well in place, none missing or altered.
