First edition illustrated with a frontispiece showing a view of the Cherry-Hill penitentiary in Philadelphia and four folded plans of various prison facilities. In 1831, Alexis de Tocqueville (1805-1859) obtained a mission from the Ministry to study the American penitentiary system. He spent a year in America and returned with two major works, De la démocratie en Amérique and Du Système pénitentiaire aux Etats-Unis, the latter having played a determining role in the reform of prisons and the management of confinement in France.
