120. BUFFON (Georges Louis Leclerc, comte de) & LACEPEDE (Bernard Germain Étienne de Laville-sur-Illon, comte de). Complete works of buffon. Put in order, preceded by a notice on the author's life, and followed by a speech entitled: general view of the progress of several branches of natural sciences since the middle of the last century; by the Count of Lacepède. Paris, Rapet et Cie, 1817-1818. 12 volumes in-8, fir green basane, gilt roulette framing the boards, romantic plate stamped in cold on the boards, with in the center a gilt fleuron with a monkey on an acanthus leaf, smooth spine (unsealed) decorated with gilt and cold motifs, marbled edges (Binding of the time). First printing of this edition established by Lacépède. The illustration consists of 201 plates out of text engraved in intaglio after Jean-Gabriel Prêtre, including a portrait of the author, 14 plates and folding maps for the History of the Earth, 3 plates for the History of Man, 79 plates for animals and 125 plates (out of 126) for birds. Without the last 3 volumes on fish. Edition numbered and signed by hand by the publisher. Plate 89 of the history of birds is missing. Binding rubbed, spines unstuck, four starts of spines cracked. The leather is missing at the bottom of the spine of volume 9. Some leaves are partially crossed by a worm gallery, thin as a hair, and have been carefully and professionally repaired.
