126. JAMES (Robert). Dictionnaire universel de médecine, de chirurgie, de chymie, de botanique, d'anatomie, de pharmacie, d'histoire naturelle, &c. Paris, Briasson, David l'aîné & Durand, 1746-1748. 6 vols. in-folio, [7] f., cxxxvi, [700] p., 12 pl. ; [836] p., 13 pl. ; vi, [1] p., [844] p., 12 pl. ; [844] p., 13 pl. ; [854] p., 6 pl. ; [1] p. (privilege), [856] p., 10 pl., marbled fawn calf, richly decorated spine. First French edition of the treatise by the English physician Robert James (1703-1776) translated by Denis Diderot, Marc-Antoine Eidous and François-Vincent Toussaint, and enlarged by the French physician Julien Busson (1717-1781). The text is illustrated with 66 plates numbered 68 (in volume III, plates VII and VIII on the same leaf and plates IX and X undifferentiated in the table because the plate entitled X corresponds to plate III of the first volume). It is while participating in the translation of this work that Diderot would have had the idea of his encyclopedia, according to Garrison and Morton. Bindings a little rubbed, corners dulled, 3 headpieces missing, the others removed, old tear repaired on one plate without missing, handwritten inscriptions on the bandage plates, rare foxing, other minor defects. (Walleriana, 5112; Garrisson & Morton, 6799)
