5. ARIOSTE (Ludovic). Roland furieux, heroic poem. New trans - Lot 5
5. ARIOSTE (Ludovic). Roland furieux, heroic poem. New translation, by M. d'Ussieux. Paris, Brunet & Laporte, 1775-1778. 4 vols. in-8, 321 p. ; 391 p. ; 407 p. ; 410 p., calf with roots, smooth spines decorated with small irons including birds, title and tomaison pieces, gilt garland on the covers.
Edition illustrated with a portrait of Ariosto in frontispiece and 92 plates. The compositions are the 46 that Charles-Nicolas Cochin (1715-1790) made for the in-4 edition the same year to which we added the 46 of the suite of G. Baskerville employing various artists (including 2 redone by Moreau).
The majority of the engravings are before the letter in this copy but Cohen hardly believes it and suggests that they were printed with a cachet and with a scratched frame. The translation is by the Angoumoisin Louis Dussieux (1744-1805) and the edition continued over two years to the great displeasure of the subscribers because the first editor had died in the meantime. Pleasant contemporary binding.
Bindings a little rubbed, with an accident to a headpiece and corners worn away, marginal worm bites on two volumes, which do not reach the text but are quite present, other minor defects.
(Cohen, 98).
