The text by the physician and physiocrat Nicolas-Gabriel Clerc, known as Le Clerc (1726-1798) was composed for the prince at the request of Catherine of Russia. Although Grimm described the work as a "narcotic novel", it contains interesting elements on Chinese philosophy applied to Western thought.
