108. MILTON (John). Paradise Lost, poem. Edition in English - Lot 108
108. MILTON (John). Paradise Lost, poem. Edition in English and French. Paris, Defer de Maisonneuve, 1792. 2 volumes gd in-4, illustrated with 12 plates by J.-F. Schall, contemporary basane jaspered, smooth spine decorated, red and black title and tomaison pieces, gilt roulette on the boards, inner lace, gilt edges. First edition of the remarkable color illustration, in stipple, and including twelve figures drawn by Jean-Frédéric Schall, engraved by Bonnefoy, Clément, Colibert, Demonchy and Gautier. The stipple style of engraving used by Nicolas Colibert allows to render the tones by juxtaposing numerous points obtained with a roulette or a burin.
Bilingual edition. The prose translation by Dupré de Saint-Maur (according to Cohen, attributed to Louis Racine by Barbier) is placed opposite the English text. It is preceded by a Life of Milton.
The binding is worn, the dilapidated spines are detached, the spines are cracked, the corners worn. The work has some foxing.
