Les Essais, new edition exactly purged of the defects of the previous ones, according to the true original, enriched & increased in the margins of the names of the authors who are quoted there, & of the version of their Greek & Latin passages, with very-important & necessary observations for the relief of the reader. Paris, P. Le Petit, 1657. In-folio, t., portrait, [15] f., 834 p. (miscalculated 840), [19] f. (table), brown basane, spine ribbed and decorated. Edition made on that of 1652, with the preface of Marie de Gournay, with the motto with the olive tree and the portrait of Montaigne.
The copy contains 4 leaves of the 18th century which are anonymous handwritten reflections on 5 pages after reading Montaigne : "All the moralists, and after them the people of the world who want to give themselves the air of having lived and thought, have so often repeated that a friend was an untraceable treasure, that one generally does not believe in friendship anymore..."
Old handwritten bookplate on the flyleaf of "Ch. Fr. Fenut".
Binding rubbed, corners dulled, edges worn, marks, small leather chips, jaws superficially split, small marginal worm bites (discrete), small light halos in margins, foxing, corners creased, one leaf with surplus trim and other minor defects.
