Memoirs of Mademoiselle de Montpensier, daughter of Gaston d'Orléans, brother of Louis XIII, King of France. Amsterdam, J. Wetstein & G. Smith, 1746. 8 volumes in-12, red morocco, spine with ornate faux-nerves, boards stamped with a central gilded medallion with interlacing, interior lace, gilded edges, dates at the end. The memoirs of a woman in the heart of the aristocracy of the seventeenth century, composed of related facts but also of illusions, disappointments, pains and confessions. The whole is in a luxurious and perfectly executed unsigned binding.
Provenance: from the library in Melbury (Dorset) of Henry Edward Fox-Strangways, 5th Earl of Ilchester (1847-1905), attested by his engraved and armorial bookplate, pasted on the reverse of each of the boards.
