118. NORBLIN DE LA GOURDAINE (Jean-Pierre). Album of etching - Lot 118
118. NORBLIN DE LA GOURDAINE (Jean-Pierre). Album of etchings. S.l.n.d., circa 1830. In-plane of 18 sheets mounted on tabs, bound in half red cloth, gilt title on the spine, monogram on the cloth on the upper cover (later binding). A composite album gathering 89 etchings by the painter and engraver Jean-Pierre Norblin de la Gourdaine (1745-1830), that is to say the major part of his engraved work. The sizes vary a lot, 2 x 1 cm for the smallest, 43 x 40 cm for the biggest. There are the two self-portraits, a beautiful proof of La Chaste Suzanne (1776), Le Roi de Bohème (1777), La grande résurrection de Lazare, Ecce Homo, Le Scribe (1781), Alexandre et Diogène, etc. Influenced by Rembrandt and Watteau, Norblin spent most of his career as a painter and engraver in Poland where he is still considered one of the greatest artists of the Enlightenment. Browning paper for most of the prints, other minor defects.
