147. [Binding]. Early 19th century wooden case entirely cove - Lot 147
147. [Binding]. Early 19th century wooden case entirely covered with red long-grained morocco, decorated with gilt fillets, acanthus leaves and cold frieze, ornate brass clasp with lock (key missing), green moiré paper lining, containing 4 notebooks each measuring 13 x 20 x 1 cm. The notebooks are bound in half old red morocco with romantic gilt decoration on the spine titled Copies of letters, Poetry, Memories and Thoughts. The blank paper of the notebooks is James Whatman's wove paper. Although these notebooks remained blank until the dawn of the 20th century, a hand has pasted newspaper articles on 7 sheets of the Poetry notebook with dates of 1902, 1904 and 1905. The notebooks bear old labels: D. Latour, Marchand papetier, cours du XXX juillet, Bordeaux. The bindings are worn in one place, with missing paper and leather, as the passage is tightened at the lock of the case and rubs the books when taken out or replaced. Attached is a missal Heures du Moyen-Age. Paris, Gruel Engelmann, 1862. Each page richly illustrated in chromolithography and each leaf mounted on tab. Bound in plum morocco, spine with faux-nerve, the first plate is decorated with an enamelled silver cross whose central medallion is monogrammed. One of the two clasps is missing. Gilt and anti-marked edges. Some leaves detached from the tabs, but present. Work not collated.
