163 [Binding]. LA FONTAINE (Jean de). Fables, with the praise of La Fontaine by Chamfort. Paris, D. Jouaust, Librairie des bibliophiles, 1885. 2 volumes in 2 gd in-8, illustrated with 3 suites of illustrations, thus each engraving is in 4 states. Signed lined binding in plum morocco, spine ribbed and decorated, titled and tomé in gold, the other boxes decorated with a triple fillet frame with small iron in spandrels. Dishes framed with a cold fillet, then a triple fillet around which wraps a vine in leaves, fleurons in ecoinçon. Heads guilloche, double fillet on the cuts. Tan morocco lining decorated with a rich gilt decoration based on small irons, double fillet and garland of mosaic flowers in plum or yellow ochre morocco. Opposite: black silk lining embroidered with floral and geometric motifs in red, green and platinum. Double comb paper endpapers. Head trimmed and gilt, other gilt edges on witnesses, cons. cover, common lined case (Marius Michel).
Doubled binding signed by Marius Michel. Edition in large paper numbered at 220 copies. One of 20 copies on Whatman, after 10 on Japon and 20 on Chine. The work should only include a double proof for each engraving. There are four of them, including 3 before the letter on Japon, on Chine, on Whatman and one in final state with the letter on Whatman.
Provenance: bookplate in red morocco stamped in gold with a mitre and two intersecting episcopal crosses, in the name of Cortlandt F., Bishop.
