168. ROUSSEAU (Jean Jacques). Dictionary of music. Paris, Vve Duchesne, 1768. In-8, xii, 547 p., [1] p. (errata), pl., marbled fawn basane, spine with ornamented nerves. First edition in-8 (the original edition in-4 is of Geneva, 1767) illustrated with 13 folded plates of engraved music of this dictionary which required 16 years of work from Rousseau. It should be noted that he also laid the first stone of ethnomusicology with the transcription of Chinese tunes, American savages, Persians, etc. (plate N).
Binding slightly rubbed, one corner broken, headbands removed, manuscript bookplate crossed out on the flyleaf, other minor defects. (Fétis, VII, 335).
