174. SARPI (Paolo). History of the Council of Trent translated by Amelot de la Houssaie, with historical, political, and moral remarks. Amsterdam, G.P. and J. Blaeu, 1713. In-4, [24] f., 800 p., [23] f. (table), [2] f.v., fawn half-basin with ribbed spine, t.p. and gilt date on spine (20th binding). 3rd edition of the book by Paolo Sarpi (1552-1623) which offers a critical view of the events of the Council of Trent and questions some of the positions taken by the Catholic Church at the time. It was used extensively by Protestants and John Milton called it the great unmastifier.
Provenance: John Wilkes (1725-1797) British politician and journalist, attested by his armorial bookplate on the reverse of the front cover. This provenance assumes that the bookbinder recovered the bookplate from the copy he made.
Paper sometimes slightly foxed.
