190. VIGNY (Alfred de). Cinq-mars ou une conjuration sous Louis XIII. Paris, Urbain Canel, 1827. 2 volumes in-8, contemporary binding in long-grained red morocco, smooth spine decorated and titled. Framed with gilt fillets punctuated with fleurons on the boards. The center of the boards is occupied by a large figure composed of geometric interlacing of sixteenth century inspiration. Filleted edges, inner garland, gilt edges. Vigny's handwritten letter, unsigned, on one of the blank pages of the book: to Madame la vicomtesse de Martignac Hommage de l'auteur. Madame de Martignac, born Elisabeth de Belisle, held a salon in Miramont de Guyenne, at that time, frequented by writers, artists and politicians. Lamartine, Victor Hugo, Guizot, Chateaubriand, Delavigne were happy to meet there. Her husband, the Viscount de Martignac, was deputy of Marmande, minister of the interior and a great lawyer.
Third revised and corrected edition. Edition from the printing house of Balzac.
Some foxing. Small rubs, brown spots on the bindings, traces of wetness in the lower margin of the first volume.
