200. BENOIT (Pierre Jacques). Voyage à Surinam, description - Lot 200
200. BENOIT (Pierre Jacques). Voyage à Surinam, description des possessions néerlandaises dans la Guyane. Brussels, Société des Beaux-Arts, 1839. In-folio, 76 p., pl., green half-maroquin with corners.
First edition of "one of the most beautiful books on Dutch Guiana", according to Chadenat. The text by the Belgian painter and adventurer Pierre Jacques Benoît (1782-1854), who embarked late for Suriname, is illustrated with 100 drawings sketched on the spot that the author brought back with him to be put on stone by Jean-Baptiste Madou and Paul Lauters. These lithographs are printed on Chine at a rate of one, two or sometimes even several subjects, and laminated on 50 plates. The compositions display an obvious romantic beauty, which is certainly due to the exoticism of the representation, but also to the artist's eye, who was able to render the gestures and postures of the slaves he represents, the wild density of the landscapes and the picturesque activities.
Spine missing, numerous foxing, other minor defects.
(Chadenat, 14; Sabin, 4737).
