210 MOYRAC DE MAILLA (Joseph-Anne-Marie). Histoire générale - Lot 210
210 MOYRAC DE MAILLA (Joseph-Anne-Marie). Histoire générale de la Chine, ou annales de cet empire traduites du tong-kien-kang-mou, par feu père joseph-Anne-Marie de Moyrac de Mailla, jésuite françois, missionnaire à Pékin, publiées par M. l'abbé Grosier. Paris, P.-D. Pierres & Clousier, 1777-1785. 13 volumes in-4 in homogeneous contemporary binding, marbled fawn basane, spine ribbed and ornamented, title and tomaison parts. For almost two decades Joseph-Anne-Marie de Moyriac de Mailla (1669-1748), a Jesuit father settled in Peking, worked on maps of the empire, published several religious books in Chinese and contributed to make Europeans discover China. The work is illustrated with 4 maps with enhanced contours, 15 plates and 5 tables. A complete copy of volume XIII (Description générale de la Chine ou Tableau de l'état actuel de cet Empire), which was entirely written by Abbé Grosier. Typographical bookplate of Doctor Grassi pasted to the title pages, perhaps Antoine de Grassi (1753-1815) considering the provenance of the copy, without certainty however. Bindings lightly rubbed with spotting, a few accidents to the headpieces, one edge of volume I removed, one corner broken on volume II, tear without missing on the first map of China, a marginal tear on one leaf of volume VIII, partially split bit on volume VIII, marginal worm bite on the last 24 leaves of volume XIII, other minor defects. (Cordier, Sinica, 583).
