A traditionalist novel, L'Étape relates the social ascent and conversion of a young man who comes from an anti-clerical socialist background and who ends up blossoming in monarchism and Catholicism. L'Étape is one of the major novels of Paul Bourget, who inaugurates in his work "the novel of ideas". Bourget tries to show that the French society is sick of the egalitarian ideas promulgated by the French Revolution. His novel is a violent criticism of the democratic system. This work aroused many hostile reactions but received the support of the Action française. A very nice copy, slight rubbing on the beginning of the spine of the upper board.
