307. VERGEZ (Eugène). Castles of Bourgeais and Cubzaguais. S - Lot 307
307. VERGEZ (Eugène). Castles of Bourgeais and Cubzaguais. Set of 5 original pencil drawings, unsigned, attributed to the painter Eugène Vergez (1848-1926) and having been executed from life to be used for the illustration of Bordeaux and its wines by Édouard Féret, the famous guide Cocks & Féret - Château Peychaud à Teuillac, M. Effié. s.d. (between 1872 and 1890). Original pencil drawing, 30 x 23 cm. This view of the château de Peychaud from its vineyard was engraved and printed with good fidelity to the original. We note that the artist was surprised by the size of the panorama and came to a stop on the left margin. The engraver has restored the missing wall and some space to rebalance the composition. Dark trace in the right summit edge of the drawing.
- Château Terrefort in Cubzac, M. Quancart. n.d. (between 1872 and 1890). Original pencil drawing, 29.5 x 23 cm.
This view of Château Terrefort from the meadow has been published with a nice correspondence between this original drawing and the engraved interpretation.
- Château Berthou in Comps, M. E. Cailleux. s.d. (between 1872 and 1890). Original pencil drawing, 30 x 23 cm.
This view of the Château Berthou from its vineyard is particularly well done by the artist; he took care to shape the trees, to detail the balustrade, the shutter boards or the curtains at the windows. This composition has been published.
- Château du Gd Jour in Prignac and Cazelle, M. Castanet. n.d. (between 1872 and 1890). Original pencil drawing, 30 x 23 cm. This view of the château du Grand Jour below the park is nicely balanced. It was published, but the engraver could not help but add weight to the lightness of the buildings. Missing blank paper in the upper right corner.
- Château La Barde in Tauriac, M. Gm Joubert in Bourg. n.d. (between 1872 and 1890). Original pencil drawing, 30 x 23 cm. This general view of the Château La Barde in the middle of its vineyard has been published, the perspective effect rendered by the artist has been considerably overwritten by the engraving which remains quite faithful to it.
