16. [Cuisine]. Set of 3 renowned antique works. - APPERT (François Nicolas). Le Livre de tous les ménages, ou l'art de conserver, pendant plusieurs années, toutes les substances animales et végétales. Paris, Barrois, 1831. In-8, (1) f., xix, 267 p., [1] p., 4 folding plates, modern binding in crushed raspberry half cloth. Fourth edition, revised and enlarged with new procedures, experiments and observations, and decorated with 4 folding engraved plates. Some leaves uniformly browned, wetness, scattered foxing. (Oberlé, 184, for the first ed. of 1810). - GRIMOD DE LA REYNIERE (Alexandre-Balthazar)]. Manuel des amphitryons, contenant un traité de la dissection des viandes à table, la nomenclature des menus les plus nouveaux pour chaque saison, et les élémens de politesse gourmande. Paris, Capelle et Renand, 1808. In-8, 384 p., modern binding in crushed raspberry half cloth. Sought-after first edition of a famous text on gastronomy. The work is complete with its table of contents, pp. 357-384 (often missing, says Oberlé). Unfortunately, although normally illustrated with 17 plates, this copy contains only 13. There is some light (healthy) wetness. (Oberlé, 135) - MENON]. La Cuisinière bourgeoise, suivie de l'Office, à l'usage de tous ceux qui se mêlent de dépenses de maisons. Bruxelles, F. Foppens, 1779. 2 volumes in 1 vol. in-12, xxiv, 320 p. ; [2] f., 320 p., marbled brown basane, ornate ribbed spines. This new edition has been enlarged by several additions. There have been many editions of La Cuisinière, as well as forgeries that are not always faithful to the original text. The author claims in the preface that this 1779 edition is the correct one. Binding rubbed, headbands damaged, corners dulled, leather split vertically down the middle of the spine, probably as a result of numerous openings on the front cover. A useful and much-used book in its early years.
